• Issued by the Royal Mail on 6th September 1988.
• Miniature sheet of four mint stamps, which commemorate 100 years since the death of the prolific artist and writer, Edward Lear. Edward Lear was born on 12 May 1812, the twentieth of 21 children. He was Queen Victoria's drawing master. Ruskin put Lear's 'Book of Nonsense' at the top of his list of one hundred contemporary titles. He died at San Remo on 30 January 1888.
• The stamps feature the Owl and the Pussy-cat.
• MS1409 was used to support the Stamp World London 90 International Stamp Exhibition.
